Named Patient Import

Named Patient Imports - In the medical practice, sometimes the drugs which are not registered in a particular country, are required for the treatment of patients to save their lives, these drugs, are otherwise approved and registered in some other country.

To facilitate import of such drugs for personal use, in small quantities, it is provided under the drugs and cosmetic rules 1945, that a permit for import of small quantities of drugs for personal use could be obtained from the office of the Drugs Controller General(India).

There are some medicines which have been approved recently in USA or Europe but not yet approved in India or any other country, are not permitted to be imported or marketed commercially.

Named – Patient Program is to facilitate import of such medicines for personal use. There is a provision under the Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, that permits the patient to import these medicine in small quantities.
